The 16th edition of the International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS) will take place from 28 to 30 October 2025 in Groningen, the Netherlands. Organised by the Waddenacademie and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat on behalf of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation, the symposium will bring together around 200 scientists from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. In preparation, the call for abstracts has now been opened.

This year’s symposium will focus on the cumulative impacts of natural and human-induced factors on the Wadden Sea’s Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), a key feature of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The event will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering dialogue, and exploring solutions to pressing challenges facing this unique coastal region. Findings from the symposium will feed into the Trilateral Governmental Conference in early 2026 in Denmark.

Discussion will centre around the following twelve themes:

  • Geological Processes
  • Ecological Processes
  • Biodiversity
  • Integrity
  • Protection
  • Climate Action
  • Green Shipping
  • Tourism
  • Water Resilience
  • Broad Prosperity
  • Sustainable Fisheries
  • Renewable Energy

Researchers interested in presenting are invited to submit abstracts by 16 May 2025. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 10 June 2025.
